Collector's Corner: Could I ever be a one watch guy?

My Top 5 Omega Speedmaster Watches

Too often Women's Sports Watches are just smaller versions of men's models. Or, a men's model is recreated smaller and with dashes of pink. Because all sporty women like pink... right.... Which is definitely not a fault of Swarovski, but maybe the whole subset? Either way, this new Swarovski Octa Sports Ladies' Watch reflects the consistent trends of women's Sports watches today, in a very moderately priced, yet visually appealing case.

The Marina Chain Collection Watches by Gucci are priced depending on the metal and whether or not diamonds are included, but break down as approximately ,300 for the solid 18 karat Yellow Gold version - ,095 for the 18 karat Yellow Gold and Stainless Steel Version - and ,915 for the simply Stainless Steel version. Available in two sizes - Small ("Large" at 33mm x 43.2mm) and Even Smaller (Or just "Small" at 26mm x 35mm), this is still a very dainty watch. And with several different options for diamonds, you can order a Marina Chain Watch to truly reflect your own style.

The watch is pretty comfortable to wear, I have no complaints. The watch looks neat, and is fun to wear. I think to myself how appropriate it would be for a suit and tie. You could pull that off really well, but they the luxury part of my mind starts to think that the design could actually quite easily lend itself to a more luxury build. Imagine a shiny alligator strap and gold case would look very cool. If the Pi Watch is a big hit, I can see it happening.

Omega Speedmaster Mark II 145.014

What is funnier is the little message at the lower part of the image above, suggesting that if you need help adjusting the watch you should take it in to your local Ernst Benz dealer. Frankly, if you don't know how to adjust your watch back or forward one hour, you need to be hit in the face repeatedly and placed in the same rehabilitation home that they send people on airplanes who need help "fastening their seat buckle." That was kinda lame Ernst Benz, right? But before I complete my tirade on the matter, I will explain that they do this to hope that you'll go into the store and buy something new - which is guess is OK, but they could have said it better. By the way, I do like that Chronolunar watch they have on there with its automatic ETA Valjoux 7751 movement inside.

So what about all the diving functions? They are all automatic and only operate underwater. There is a small sensor on the watch located at 10 o’clock. This is a dual purpose water and temperature sensor. When the watch is submerged in water a small water drop icon shows up on the dial and the watch enters “dive mode.” The screen changes to show four vital pieces of information; the dive time (how long you have been diving), current depth, maximum depth, and water temperature (displayed around the dial). After your dive you can use the log function to retrieve this data. It is just that simple. A no nonsense, no instruction necessary dive watch. The Suunto Elementum Aqua is the dive watch for dummies, and for a ton of people out there who don’t want to remember another set of instructions this watch is a godsend. Let’s face it, diving is a sport that requires a lot of equipment, has a lot of rules, and requires a lot to remember. The last thing you want to do is have a dive computer that you forget how to use underwater. This watch does all the hard stuff for you. Sure the options might be limited, but it does all the basics, and it does them well.

We just released our first show, "About Us and a Trip to Japan." It is still a bit rough, the audio levels need to be tweaked so we sound as "delightful" as possible. It is gonna get better from here, and I understand that you'll be able to subscribe to the show on iTunes soon. I'll likely post here on aBlogtoRead.com with each new show.

On the side of the watch you have a gold colored screw-down crown to wind the watch and adjust the time and date. This crown features the Edox logo: a stylized hourglass. A further two push buttons control the chronograph start-stop-reset functions.

I am not going to go into much detail when talking about these watches as there are too many of them, and you can get lots of little details about each watch from Ball directly.  Careful though. You might be drawn to tears! Last time I was at their site they started playing Amazing Grace. So I saw these watches last June in Las Vegas at the JCK show. These are my favorite of the Ball watches that I was able to see there. Overall these are some very nice watches for the money. Lots of functionality and good solid looks without a lot of fuss.

TX put the 400 series watches in a big case, 46mm wide actually. It doesn't feel so big, but would dwarf a classic Rolex Datejust that was just 36mm wide. The crown is very impressive with its relief "TX' logo that is something hard to find on watches such as this. Really nice touch. The case is further water resistant to 100 meters and has an almost flush, flat sapphire crustal that looks to have AR coating applied on the back of the crystal. You can tell that the smooth polished bezel, dial accents, hands, and crown and pusher are all gold toned adding to that classic look. The rest of the steel case has some contrasting polished and brushed finishing. The level of polish is pretty good as you notice it distinctly. I want to mention the size of the watch again, because I think if "dad" (which might be you), or someone else in that hegemonic man role thinks the watch is too big in comparison to their old watch... I would simply recommend giving it a try. Then they will find it hard to go back to 'ol' small and dainty' every again.

The case of the watch is in steel and 41mm wide. It is actually a bit smaller than some of the other Marvin watches that are 44mm wide, but I like the size. Sometimes you don't want something as large on your wrist - and the 41mm size feels friendly and familiar. Most of the case is brushed, while little elements (such as parts of the lugs and around the bezel) are polished. Marvin applies the sapphire crystal on their watches in a unique fashion. The crystal itself is flat, but around the edges it is faceted before it goes into the case. It creates and additional point for light to refract off the watch and is a good character element for the brand. The rear of the watch has a K1 mineral crystal on the caseback window looking into the movement. Another interesting feature the seal of the Marvin company founders that is engraved on the bottom left hand side of the watch case. It reads "M & E D." This stands for Marc & Emmanuel Didisheim, who are the people responsible for Marvin's original beginning a quite long time ago (circa 1850). I've never seen a watch company place just such an engraving on the case, and I quite like it. You'll find this engraving on most all of their watches in the current brand lineup.

As nature survival series go, Man vs. Wild is pretty entertaining. I often want the show to be longer, showing more detailed elements of survival in harsh areas of the world without relying on most of the "tools of civilization" we rely on. I've also been getting into another survival show called Apocalypse Man (on the History Channel). This show is similar in concept, but sort of the reverse. The guy here wears a Nike digital watch I am pretty sure, but at the end of the show in the credits, there is a clear message thanking Casio. Maybe the crew has them. Apocalypse man is all about a guy trying to survive in a post apocalyptic world. He is in cities, but they are totally devoid of people. So he has to scavenge and build things - it is pretty cool. Sad and sort of humorous is that the cities he is in that are all ghost town are probably in Louisiana (post Katrina) and in Michigan. What the shows have in common aside from the survivalist slant, is that they are both "looking for other people." Bear is looking to get rescued while the Apocalypse man is just looking for other (friendly) humans. I do recommend it if you get a chance to see it. That of course goes for both shows.

The Best & The Brightest: Breitling Watches

Looks like you need to get yourself a new watch winder. The handiest way to keep your automatic watches ready for action when you want to wear them. I used sit there and wind a bunch of automatic watches manually each day. It was a pain. If you don't wear your automatic mechanical watch for a day or two it stops. Then you need to reset it when you wear it. If you only have one watch, this isn't a problem - but as your collection grows... well you can see where these useful accessories come in quite handy. Good watch winders aren't cheap. Sure you can get Chinese made watch winders for - 0 - but you'll have to get a new one each several months. Those ones just don't last. Plus, they are often too  plasticy looking and not at all suitable for your new luxury love.

Everyone wants to know, "Why are watches so expensive?" We talk about justified and not-so-justified reasons: materials, marketing, movements and what good value means in a watch. We also get into handing watches down to the next generation a little bit and we talk about a few of our favorite watches of the moment, including the Orange Monster.

The winner of the watch was Dennis K. from New Jersey. He was chosen truly at random. I gave each entrant a number and then used this random number generator that picks a number between two values (1 - 100 for example). Between the three choices Dennis chose the Dievas Zeta Pro Phantom, which has the all black dial (as opposed to red or yellow). The Professional watches all have black PVD  applied to them, and each Dievas Zeta watch is an automatic. It is a good look as you can see. Here are some thoughts from the winner about the watch:

Omega Speedmaster Rattrapante 3540.50

The bracelet is comfortable and attractive, and 24mm wide. The small links make it good for sizing as you get a more precise fit. The deployment is push button and diminutive, relatively well done and easy to operate. The irony is that the metal bracelet is the hardiest of the straps, but the worst for actual diving. I would recommend one of the rubber straps for diving. I’ll tell you why. Unless you are never going to wear your Elementum Aqua on your wrist, the bracelet will not fit over your dive suit as it does not have a diver’s extension. So you either size the bracelet for your diver suite, use the watch for non suit diving, or swap in a rubber diving bracelet for those purposes. It is a minor thing, but something you should know for a watch that is such a dedicated diver’s watch.

I can really appreciate this watch from a functional level. Truth be told,  I don't think that Bremont had to do too much new stuff to make the Bremont Martin-Baker MB-1 or MB-2 watches as durable as they are. It was more a matter of applying existing techniques to make the watch as durable as it is. The difference really is in the physical testing that the watches underwent to test out their durability. Basically they can survive the uber amount of g-forces you experience when being ejected out of an airplane via ejection seat, and the subsequent jerky ride back to Earth.
