Where the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Grande Complication stands out the most is that it offers a blend of this extremely high level of complexity and refinement with a sporty looking case – replacing the round and more conservatively styled cases of most of its alternatives with the bold (and perhaps a bit "loud") case of the Royal Oak Offshore. And while we should not let the rugged looks fool us – a watch with such delicate a movement is not to be used for swimming or climbing a mountain – it nevertheless makes for an interesting and more unique aesthetic.

Roger Dubuis Hommage Minute Repeater Tourbillon Automatic Watch Watch Releases

When it comes to the "engine" of the MB&F HM6 Space Pirate, high amounts of hand-applied perlage and long, swirling edges with polished bevels dominate the view. Unsurprisingly, unique movement features necessitate more unusual components (lots of them), and here, even these have been painstakingly hand-finished – notably, it is just about impossible to have these highly unusual parts and their weird shapes and angles decorated by machines.

It is also in this department where I could experience more noticeable changes from last year. On this occasion, watchmakers from Chopard, Montblanc, TAG Heuer, and Zenith were all present, while Jaeger-LeCoultre had set up a "Sound Lab," which provided an approximately 40 minute long introduction to the world of chiming watches. In this separated booth seating six, different devices like microscopes, a projector, and of course, a knowledgeable watchmaker were ready to lead the pre-registered guests through the countless intricacies of chiming watches. I still feel bad that I could never find the spare time to sit through an entire session – there was just too much to see and do.

Two Speedmaster Professional Watches With A 45 Year Age Difference

Big news today as Apple has announced its official hiring of Australian designer Marc Newson, who will work directly with Apple's head of design (Sir) Jonathan Ive. My understanding is that Newson will retain his ability to work with third party clients, but don't expect him to be designing watches for anyone else. Apple hasn't specified what Marc Newson will be working on specifically, but I believe it is safe to say that his first major projects will be on the iWatch (or iTime, or whatever Apple decides to call its upcoming smartwatch device).

The forged carbon case has a matte black (under some lighting conditions dark gray) color to it, with some parts of the wavy pattern standing out, thanks to their grey/silvery color. The bare carbon is warm and very soft to the touch, and to some extent, it even feels as though it were a delicate material. That, however, could not be further from the case: forged carbon is a material that was developed to be used in airplanes, military forces' equipment, as well as racing cars and boats. And while it is very likely that neither of these industries care too much about the tactile feel of a newly developed material – their top priorities rather include rigidity, durability, and precision workmanship – the forged carbon case makes for a somewhat unusual, albeit very pleasant wearing experience.

Geak II Watch Stretches The Limits Of Smartwatch Battery Life Watch Releases

Even though I fully admit that in many instances G-Shock watches look more attractive in a mainstream way with analog dials, I feel that they are a step backwards in regard to functionality and simplicity in comparison to digital screen dials. So in a sense, G-Shock went "analog" for vanity - you simply can't win when wanting something ultra durable and sexy, it seems.

Take on the High Seas with a New Diver’s Watch

You have to realize that an actual decision at HP needed to be made that their smartwatch was going to be attractive. It might seem incredibly obvious to watch lovers that a timepiece needs to be good looking, but I am telling you that this was (or still is) news to a lot of engineers. So when Apple goes on about how the Apple Watch is the most personal thing they have designed, and how they need to give the consumers options to make them feel as though they are wearing something that feels individual, this is actually based in accumulated data and research that says "people like to wear stuff that looks good." A lot of this isn't obvious to people who produce technology that is more focused on functionality than looks.

Buying Watches In Newport, Rhode Island: Grenon's Of Newport Watch Stores

I have always been fascinated by Zenith’s Pilot Type 20 watches. What started as a limited edition 57.5mm watch in 2012 slowly grew into something of a sub-collection within Zenith’s Pilot collection of watches. And one of the new Pilot Type 20 watches this year that is based on that original limited edition watch from two years ago is the Pilot Montre d’Aeronef Type 20 GMT 1903 - a mouthful, I know. This watch, which commemorates the Wright Brothers’ first flight, is more reasonably sized at 48mm, but what is unique about it is its aged look. From the specially selected bund strap down to the aged lume, this watch looks as if it was really from 1903.

The Nomos Tangente (35mm) on a womans’ six inch wrist. She would have needed the short strap to have the watch comfortably fit.

Watch auctions are becoming increasingly popular. And recently, an important auction was held celebrating the 175th anniversary of Patek Philippe where the Henry Graves Supercomplication fetched an astronomical price of million, which really put watch auctions in the spotlight. However, don’t be fooled into thinking for one moment that watches are a viable investment vehicle. We share some common misconceptions about watch auctions, and also tell you what you should look out for should you decide to dabble in the world of watch auctions.

I highly recommend the Apple Watch for people who like to playfully communicate with their friends and loved ones. The new communication tools are impressive, and will no doubt prove addictive for young people and those who grew up with technology.

It also helped the smaller brands to get out the word about their products and gain the interest of the world-wide community. I’ve received thousands of compliments during all those years, about the community, and the way it helped individual members to learn about watches, to understand the complexity of a watch, to find their way to watchmakers, to become a homemade watchmaker, to build their own personal interest in watches, and to build their collection. All aspects of this hobby, every single one of them, can be found and shared on Watchuseek, in a friendly atmosphere. That’s what makes Watchuseek the current leader on the internet.

Hyetis REDLINE Smartwatch Debuts RDL-001 Swiss Mechanical + Electronic Movement Watch Releases

Skeletonized watches often come with a serious drawback, and that is a reduction in legibility.  That means, in exchange for an attractively decorated, open look at the movement, the wearer isn't able to read the time as well. In some instances, that means the watch dial merely has hands over a skeletonized dial surface, and in other instances legibility is somewhat preserved through the integration of hour markers or a partial dial. For this watch, Glashutte Original opted for the latter. In their "instrument watch spirit," I think it would have been bad for brand character to make a watch that doesn't work very well as a watch.

I've written before that if Breguet were around today, he would be a fan of silicon for the material's properties that allow mechanical watch movements to be more reliable. As such, a few years ago the Breguet brand was among the first to eagerly adopt silicon parts into its movements - which is the case in the in-house made caliber 581DR automatic movement used in the 5377 watch collection. Inside of the movement is a silicon lever escapement as well as balance spring. While silicon was not a material used in Breguet's day, the contemporary usage of the material is something that I feel Abraham Louis would have stood behind.

Laco Watches - Rewriting Horological History Since 1925 Sales & Auctions Sponsored Post

Perpetual calendar chronographs are something of a Patek Philippe specialty, and nearly each one of their perpetual calendar chronographs is a bit special. The reference 5270 was launched in 2011 to great expectations, and it duly delivered, as it was the first Patek Philippe perpetual calendar chronograph to use a 100% in-house manufactured movement. This watch could very well be a future classic.
