Everest Leather Straps For Rolex Watches Preview Hands-On

Last year in 2013, Geneva-based F.P. Journe released a timepiece called the Anniversary Tourbillon which was a wristwatch version of a pocket watch he made in 1983. The “30th Anniversary Tourbillon” was really about celebrating how far he had come since the very first timepiece that he produced himself. aBlogtoWatch covered the Anniversary Tourbillon here hands on, and for 2014, F.P. Journe has released a slight revision called the 10 Year Anniversary Tourbillon.

Greubel Forsey is, and has always been, famous for their mind-bending innovations, all but a few achieved in pursuit of excessive chronometric performance. For 2014 they have released their first perpetual calendar watch (AKA "the QP") which is an amazing feat of horological engineering.  Much of their focus has been on the tourbillon and in the past Greubel Forsey has developed this to be faster, inclined, multiple-axes, double and quadruple tourbillons - you name it and they have probably done it. While fans of such horological feats were undoubtedly well catered for by the brand, it has to be said that it was about time that they began entering some other territories of fine watch making. They made their first - likely painful - step away from the tourbillon in 2011 by developing the GMT, a watch which combined world time indication with a tiny, elaborately crafted 3-dimensional globe spinning on the dial side of the watch. For 2014 Greubel Forsey carried on this tradition by debuting the QP à Équation, a novelty that couples the brand's inclined 24-seconds tourbillon with a special perpetual calendar complication and equation of time indication.

I was pretty happy with the original Calibre watch when Cartier released it in 2010. Later, I offered an aBlogtoWatch hands-on review of the Calibre here. What many people don't recall is that Cartier chose the Calibre as the first watch to house their in-house made movement known as the caliber 1904MC. This wasn't their first in-house made movement - Cartier started with ultra-luxury stuff a few years before. The 1904MC was not only a new movement, but meant to be the base of many future movements. Designed to be flexible, the 1904MC is what all in-house movement-based Cartier timepieces contain. So here it is with a chronograph. In the Calibre Chronograph, the movement is known as the 1904-CH MC.

Also made by hand, in three separate parts, is the case which is platinum. Given that the base of the watch uses Roger Smith's Series 2 collection as a foundation, the case is more than likely 40mm wide. The dial offers just the time with a subsidiary seconds dial. This is less than the Series 2 that also features a power reserve indicator. You really have to appreciate the amazing three-dimensionality to the dial which is not only difficult to achieve, but also so masterfully makes the GREAT Britain a piece that will be admired years from now.

The other part of your question is related to how they measure magnetism and their relative resistances. Prepare to geek out:

In short, it's the classic "rock and a hard place" sort of a design conundrum. And who knows - once you've got the Octo on your wrist, it may be a concern that just melts away. If that's the path you plan to take (see it in person and make a decision), you'll be able to pick one up yourself for - well, we'll let you know when we get that piece of information. Just be thankful you weren't the one reading through the press release to bring you this information - many Bothans may have died in the process.

Harry Winston did not show a final Histoire de Tourbillon 5 watch at Baselworld 2014. In 2013 they did show the Histoire de Tourbillon 4. All that is available of the 5 are some renderings of what the watch will look like, and given Harry Winston's typical practices, we expect the timepiece will be slowly developed and released… whenever they feel like doing so. Swatch Group purchased the brand so that they would have a high-end jewelry company under their umbrella of brands. In a sense it was done because The Swatch Group's relationship with Tiffany & Co. fell apart, so rather than partner with a company they simply purchased it.

Rolex labs are as diverse as they are amazing. Perhaps the most visually interesting is the chemistry lab. Full of beakers and tubes that carry liquids and gases, the Rolex chemistry lab is full of highly trained scientists. What is it mostly used for? Well one thing that Rolex stated is that the lab is used for developing and researching oils and lubricants that they use in machines during the manufacturing process.

Most customers who come in know a great deal about watches. Others are relatively new to the hobby, and when we talk to them they will hear words like mainspring, co-axial, balance, and 2824-2 for the first time.  More than anything else, we want everyone to feel like they can explore at their own pace without pressure.

And while the way a sonnerie and/or minute repeater movement is constructed is of such incredible complexity that it will have to have an article dedicated all to itself, we do have a great opportunity to better understand how it operates thanks to the video above. As you can see in the footage, as Ariel slides the slider upon starting the minute repeater the barrel on the left rotates a couple of times. This is done to put just enough power into the barrel to sound the minute repeater and its four gongs. While the repeater operates you can see the barrel turning continuously, giving away its power to the repeater and stopping completely as the chiming function terminates.

Inside of each Autodromo Prototipo Chronograph watch is a Seiko caliber VK64 "Meca-Quartz" movement. These are analog quartz movements that are pretty nice to use. So what do you need to know about the "meca" part? That is a good question. Unlike many cheaper analog quartz chronograph watches, there are more mechanical elements at play here, so using the chronograph feels a lot more like those in purely mechanical watches. How's that? Well, the chronograph seconds hand sweeps similarly to that in a mechanical movement (versus moving forward once each second), and most important (for me), is that the chronograph hand instantly resets. On many analog quartz movement watches, the chronograph seconds hand slowly moves around the dial back to the zero position when you reset the chronograph - and I find that to be very annoying.

The original Chronometer features a highly polish case while the sides of the Regulator have a brushed finish. Although the movement calibers are slightly different, aesthetically they look almost identical. The Senator Chronometer retails for ,300 in 18kt gold and the Glashutte Original Senator Chronometer Regulator version retails for ,500.
